Understanding the challenges of the Middle East and North Africa
An interactive seminar about the politics, geopolitics, political economy, and history of one of the most challenging world regions. The background behind news headlines.
The current conflicts in the Middle East brings the MENA-Region and the larger Arab-Islamic World including Iran and Turkey again into global focus. The knowledge of 22 countries and the over 400 million people that are Europe's neighbors is still often too limited and this during times when cooperation between the people of Europe and the MENA-Region is so urgently needed - for the future of both. Only with a holistic approach and political, historical, cultural, and economic knowledge is it possible to analyze the dynamics and the prospects and challenges of the region. With lectures, audiovisual materials and practical exercises like political-strategic simulations students will be interactively immersed in regional history, political and economic dynamics and the current debates. Together we build a foundation of knowledge to better comprehend current and anticipate possible future developments. Students will not only acquire knowledge about the respective countries but also about regional and interregional trends and the geopolitical stakes.
